Passport. Gone.
If you’re an Indian passport holder and this nightmare happens to you in Paris, take a deep breath. Here’s exactly what to do, step by step.
Step 1: Don’t Panic. Retrace Fast, But Smartly.
Paris is surprisingly efficient when it comes to lost items. Go back to the last 2–3 places you clearly remember using or seeing your passport. Check cafés, metro counters, souvenir shops.
If you were using public transport, ask at the nearest metro station’s lost property desk. But don’t waste hours doing this. If you cannot locate it quickly, move to the next step.
Time matters more than hope.
Step 2: File a Police Complaint (This Is Crucial)
Head to the nearest police station (Commissariat de Police). You will need to file a “Déclaration de Perte” (loss report).
This document is extremely important. Without it, the Indian Embassy cannot process your emergency travel document.
Carry:
- A photocopy or soft copy of your lost passport (if available)
- Any other Indian ID (Aadhaar, PAN, if you have copies)
- Your visa copy
- Passport-sized photos (if possible)
If you don’t speak French, don’t worry. Many officers in Paris understand basic English.
Step 3: Contact the Indian Embassy Immediately
Now, go straight to the Embassy of India, Paris.
As an Indian citizen, this is your lifeline.
They will guide you on issuing either:
- An Emergency Certificate (EC) – allows one-way travel back to India.
- A short-validity passport – in specific cases, if you need to continue travel within Schengen (rare and case-dependent).
You’ll need:
- Police loss report
- Passport copy (if available)
- Visa copy
- Flight tickets
- Passport photos
- Filled application form
- Fees (payable as per current embassy rules)
Processing usually takes 1–3 working days, depending on documentation.
Step 4: What Happens to Your Schengen Visa?
Here’s the part many Indians worry about during their Europe romantic holidays.
If your passport is lost, your Schengen visa is technically lost with it. The Embassy will guide you, but in most cases, you will need to return to India on the Emergency Certificate. Continuing your Europe honeymoon package across countries may not be legally possible without a valid visa sticker.
This is why travel insurance is non-negotiable. If you booked your Europe couple package wisely, passport loss is usually covered, including rebooking flights and hotel adjustments.
Step 5: Inform Your Airline & Travel Insurance
Call your airline immediately and explain the situation. Airlines will require valid travel documents before boarding.
Next, contact your travel insurance provider:
- Claim for passport loss
- Claim for additional stay expenses
- Claim for flight rebooking
This step can save you thousands of rupees.
Step 6: Protect Yourself from Identity Misuse
Once back in India, apply for passport reissue under “Lost Passport” category via Passport Seva.

- Keep track of any suspicious activity
- Preserve all documents from Paris
